Like you can just replace the bulb in the "giving a shit" socket, instead of having to scrape the char off the last piece of bread fished from a malfunctioning toaster; you have no more bread, your toaster is burning in the driveway, and your metaphor has gone skipping down the block.
I've had to repeatedly remind myself that if [shame, self-recrimination, willpower, punishment, withholding rewards, panic, anxiety] had ever worked, they sure as shit haven't for a long while, so let's pivot.
